Research at the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods & Nutraceuticals is primarily focused on crops important to the prairie region including:

  • Cereals - barley, oats, wheat;
  • Pulses - beans, chickpeas, lentils, peas;
  • Oilseeds - canola, flax, hemp;
  • Specialty - buckwheat;
  • Berries & Cherries - blackberry, blueberry, chokecherry, raspberry, saskatoon, sea buckthorn;
  • Native plants - anise hyssop, bergamot, willowherb, yarrow.

While current research is focused on bioactives from these plant compounds as they relate to functional foods and nutraceuticals, we remain interested in conducting research on all plant species which can provide potentially useful bioactive compounds.
